Syrian-Iranian Cooperation: Strengthening Relationships and Resisting Sanctions

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian arrived in Damascus on Sunday last week to discuss economic cooperation with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Both sides also considered ways to combat sanctions imposed by Western countries and the United States. In addition, the talks focused on recent regional and international developments.

Abdollahian briefed Assad on the outcome of the Conference on Cooperation and Partnership where both sides confirmed that the future of the region should be determined by the will of people.

Assad stressed that cooperation between Syria and Iran has yielded positive results in protecting the interests of the two countries and people, as well as in the fight against terrorism.

Abdollahian also held talks with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad. Both sides decided to develop a strategy to counter US sanctions. At the same time, it was noted that relations between the two countries will strengthen under the new leadership of Iran.

For years, Syria and its economy have been plagued by Western sanctions, which have caused severe fuel shortages in Syria. Previously, the country mainly bought oil from Iran.

It was planned to resume close economic cooperation between the two countries despite the sanctions. With a positive outcome, states will be able to improve their position.
